Packaging Materials, Barriers and Permeability

The selection and performance of films, laminates, trays, casings and closures according to their resistance to oxygen, water vapour, light, grease, heat and mechanical damage.

Packaging materials contain the product and control exchange with the environment. Strength, flexibility, puncture resistance, heat resistance and machinability are separate from barrier performance.

Oxygen- and water-vapour transmission depend on polymer, thickness, temperature, humidity and laminate construction. A quoted value applies only to the stated test conditions.

Fat, salt, smoke condensate, sharp bones, clips and hot filling can stress a material. The package must remain suitable through processing, cooling, storage and distribution.

Vacuum, modified atmosphere and active systems require compatible films and closures. Barrier choice should reflect the intended gas composition, shelf life and product respiration or oxidation risk.

Review supplier specifications, food-contact status, seal window, transmission data and finished-pack performance. Trial the complete system under expected and worst-case conditions.

Specify material code, structure, thickness, storage, machine settings and acceptance checks. Treat substitutions as controlled changes rather than visually equivalent replacements.
