Packaging, Food-Contact and Reduced-Oxygen Law
The legal controls governing food-contact materials, packaging conditions of use and specialised reduced-oxygen packaging processes.
Packaging law controls the material that contacts food, while reduced-oxygen rules control the microbiological consequences of removing oxygen. Compliance with one layer does not automatically satisfy the other.
Polymers, coatings, inks, adhesives and additives must be suitable for the intended food, temperature and contact conditions. An authorisation may be substance-, manufacturer- or use-specific.
Heating, freezing, fatty food, acidity and contact time can change migration and material performance. A bag described as food grade is not a complete statement of lawful use.
Vacuum, modified-atmosphere, cook-chill and sous-vide systems can require defined controls, HACCP plans or variances depending on jurisdiction and establishment type.
Package atmosphere, product hurdles, refrigeration, post-process contamination and barrier properties determine shelf life. Date marking and handling instructions must match the supported system.
Retain material identity, compliance documents, supplier, lot, process approval and package specifications. Changes in film, seal, gas or product can require reassessment.
